Resignation meets Emigration
With an unemployment rate of 34.5%, most unskilled workers in South Africa are not in positions to quit their jobs. Instead, the country’s Great Resignation seems to be driven by highly skilled workers leaving their salaried jobs to work for themselves, or to seek opportunities abroad. A concerning 1m South Africans emigrated between 2015 and 2020, the majority of whom were likely part of the skilled labour force.
