Gauteng has the highest number and proportion of households living in shacks (674,000, 23%). Despite the fact that Limpopo has the highest proportion of households with monthly expenditure of R800 or less, it has the lowest proportion of shack dwellers (6%) (Labour Force Survey 2004)
