Around 13% of South Africans aged 18+ meet the diagnostic criteria for a substance use disorder (SUD), the most common type being alcohol use disorder which affects around 10% of the population. Illicit drug use disorder affects a further 9%. Despite the high prevalence of substance abuse, only 5% of people with a SUD ever access treatment.
