   And we’re less than 5 million registered tax payers supporting the economy. The dream of the first African welfare state will be short lived.

   Agree with Francois. Why would they work if they getting everything for free. I have to pay my ass off to get children thru University. Don’t even get a tax relieve on that. Others just get it for free.

   Pieter if we could get more youth to university, I am sure that education will drive down these statistics. If each of the 5 million tax payers put 1 kid through an education programme. We would reduce the 16 million to 11 mill (grant recipients) and we would increase the tax base by anothe 5 mill (educated youth)paying tax. Hows that for helping the African dream? Instead we use the infrastructure and send our kids to another country to pay tax there? Not sure how we are supposed to succeed if we contribute to the problem.

      Now who do you think is paying for that infrastructure at the moment. I surely agree that we should increase the tax base. But do you know how many graduates don’t get a job when they done. Can you blame them for leaving? They have a right to a living! And whats more, those who earned it paying for themselfs do appreciate it more and work because they have to pay back the study loan. People who get everything for free, takes it for granted, not appreciating it. We just create a evironment for a welfare state!

         Point taken. We need to break the cycle, is my desire/belief. Education is the key,I believe, ignorance is really what is costing us all as tax payers. Our next generation of grads and present generation need to be more creative and resourceful, hopefully higher EQ’s will help them connect with the masses to solve the ECONOMIC question of: scarcity, choice and opportunity cost.
