South African Pride
While June may celebrate international LGBT Pride Month, South Africa’s National Pride Month is held in October to mark the first Gay Pride march in Africa on 13 October 1990 in Johannesburg. It was organised by the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of Witwatersrand (GLOW) and acted as both a gay pride event and an anti-Apartheid march attended by about 800 people. While pride parades are now held across South Africa, Johannesburg Pride remains one of the few legal pride events in Africa.
