State-Approved Motherly Bonding
In South Africa, employees have a statutory entitlement to four consecutive months (roughly 17 weeks) of unpaid Maternity leave. While this is more than the 12 weeks offered to workers in the United States, it pales in comparison to countries with the most generous maternity benefits. Bulgaria and Greece offer workers between 56 and 43 weeks of paid leave, respectively, with a percentage of the employee’s salary still being paid to them.
