A walk-out of 300,000 steelworkers and allies under the National Union of Metalworkers South Africa has disrupted the supply chain to major industries across the country. The industry is under pressure to meet the demands for a living wage increase of 8% (inflation was 3.3% in 2020). With South Africa’s unemployment rate at 34.4%, these disruptions threaten to further destabilise an economy just recovering from Covid-19.
