   By enlarge this will be true. Even the value of a drivers license cannot be discounted here. Many parts of the economy will exclude you if you cannot transport yourself.

   The most notable exceptions to this rule must be Richard Branson. He never finished school. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both failed to complete their degrees.

   Make no mistake in all 3 cases they got a superior education. Not necessarily by the measures we like to use. Richard’s parents taught him independence at an early age. Bill and Steve had the advantage they had access to computers from early on. Steve new Hewlett and Packard at HP. Bill had a computer at school and figured out how to do stuff with it long before others did.

   All 3 had “cheats” and managed to play it brilliantly. However for each Bill, Steve, and Richard that makes it there will be probably 100 to a 1000 dropouts that pay the price for not making it.

   The Toms, Dicks and Harrys of this world definitely need proper education to surge ahead in life. Mavericks like Jobs, Gates and Bransons whilst a boon to our milieu, are a drop in the ocean of ”ordinarity” to coin such a description.

   Yet if you sum their wealth and success it will significantly distort any definition of ordinary or average.

   One has to be careful not to measure by average nor just exceptions.

   Something to think about? How overrated is an education? Or is it overrated? I think it is what you do with it that counts.

   There is food for thought … how many people that actually gets an education actually use it? and how much?

   I see it often in young graduates. They are only interested in a big pay check, in IT it gets much worse when there is a boom. Micro observation in my little world but something to wonder about.

   This is a sad statistic. It explains why we have such a high unemployment rate while we claim that select professions there is a skill and brain drain. So the gap widens, all because most South Africans think like this. So the value is of education is often misplaced in the work environment, where survival and common sense is far more important valuable than anything else. Its a double edged sword problem – those who are educated exaggerate their sense of importance and push this kind of thinking to feel better about themselves and their choices- those who are uneducated feel inadequate are perform accordingly more often than not. This mindset needs to change, so that we encourage and view successes differently, otherwise we have a situation we more than half of the population feels worthless because they may not be educated sufficiently therefore likely to be less successful. The mindset has to be, education is great, but you can be very successful even if you are not educated. this will drive the much needed entrepreneurship thinking and less reliance being ” educated “. We will definitely have less stampedes storming through varsity gates remember the recent tragic UJ incident.

      Agree with your view 🙂 Not always good to just agree but sometimes we all miss the point. We think too fancy we think what we think is right when it is totally wrong. Perception! A truly dangerous or empowering thing.
