Take a deep breath
As of April 2020, South Africa has less than 50% of the 7,000 ventilators it is expected to need for COVID-19 patients, based on modeling that puts the peak of the pandemic in June. The good news is that the lockdown in South Africa has slowed the rate of new infections, potentially delaying the peak by several months. The United States is experiencing a similar crisis, as in March 2020 they had between 160,000 and 172,000 ventilators, needing an additional 75,000 to cope with the expected demand from the pandemic. This means that they had ~69% of the ventilators they will need. (https://bit.ly/3dNmZcp, https://bit.ly/3haEqWo)
