The Day the World Exploded
In 1883 the volcano Krakatoa erupted next to the island of Java. The explosion was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT, approximately 13,000 times the power of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. It was heard 4,500km away (larger than the distance between South Africa and Tanzania). This eruption caused few direct fatalities, but the biggest of the tsunamis it created took approximately 36,000 lives.
