The forest is now a box of chocolates
In 2020, America’s Valentine’s Day chocolate spending reached $2.4bn (R37.1bn). While this purchase may be traditional, Valentine’s Day should serve as a reminder to educate oneself on how one’s chocolate is produced. Between 2012 and 2016, 14.1m hectares of forest was lost in the top 30 cocoa producing countries in the world, which was largely due to the unsustainable growth and harvesting of cocoa. This year, remember the environment and opt for sustainably sourced chocolate.
