The Great Flood
In mid-July 2021 severe storms in Europe dropped at least 15cm of rain within 24 hours. This led to overflowing streams and rivers, which triggered landslides and washed houses and cars away. At least 196 people lost their lives; 165 in Germany, and 31 in Belgium, with the numbers still expected to rise. The economic cost of the disaster is estimated to be at least $5.08bn.
