The home of Kat and the Kings
Cape Town’s District Six was a cosmopolitan community of language, religion, race, social and economic class – a direct opposition to the Apartheid government of the time. The Group Areas Act of 1950 forced the traumatic removal of more than 60,000 people in 1968. Today, District Six is split between two very different looking suburbs – Zonnebloem and Walmer Estate. An example of their difference is the proportion of residents who are retired, 12% for Zonnebloem and 5% for Walmer Estate.
