The lady of the pie chart
Florence Nightingale was not only a famous nurse during the Crimean War (1853-1856), but also an accomplished statistician. She showed that up to 70% of British deaths were due to infectious disease, not wounds . She used her famous ‘cox-comb’ visualization to petition for more sanitary conditions in hospitals. The Royal Statistical Society admitted her as their first female fellow in 1858.
