The Long Strike
The longest wage strike in South Africa’s history began 23rd January 2014 and lasted five months. Some 70,000 platinum mine workers, members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union at Lonmin, Impala Platinum, and Anglo American put tools down, seeking a basic monthly salary increase from R5,000 to R12,500. The strike cost workers earnings of around R10.6bn, the mines lost about 40% of platinum production, and the industry lost R24bn in revenue.
