In 1862, Charles Darwin was sent orchids from Madagascar, one with a nectary close on 30cm. When he saw this, he predicted that it must have evolved alongside a moth with an equally long tongue to pollinate it. Amazingly, 20 years after his death, a hawk moth of this description was identified and named X. morganii praedicta, or ‘the predicted one’. In 1992, footage was captured of this moth feeding on one orchid and transferring pollen to another, allowing the flowers to reproduce.
