In January 2021, a group of Reddit users illustrated the influence that social media can exert on the stock market. This group used the platform to coordinate mass-buying of shares in GameStop, which increased the company’s share price by ~1,700%. Retail investors who had taken short positions on the GameStop share price collectively lost $13bn as a result (as of market close on February 1st 2021).
