The Start of Democracy
Freedom Day marks 26 years of democracy, celebrating the first South African national elections in which everyone of voting age from all race groups were allowed to vote. Over a four-day period in April,1994, around 20 million queued, an 86.9% voter turnout. The day is significant because it marked the end of more than three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government.
