The wake(field) of a lie
In 1998, Andrew Wakefield and 12 colleagues published a study in Lancet suggesting a link between certain vaccines and autism. This study was very quickly refuted, and it was discovered that the study had been funded by lawyers engaged in lawsuits against vaccine-producing companies. In 2010 the study was completely retracted and Wakefield et al were held guilty of ethical violations and scientific misrepresentation.
