South Africa’s railways use Cape Gauge rails, 1067mm wide, much narrower than the more common Standard Gauge rails, 1435mm wide. In the 1870s the first Prime Minister of Cape Colony selected the gauge to be the best suited for traversing the steep mountain ranges of the region as narrower rails could turn tighter corners with lower construction costs.
