NASA has estimated that the explosion of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai near Tonga was 500 times as powerful as the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. They further estimate that ash and gas from the volcanic eruption shot 55km up into the air, just over halfway to the Karman line – the edge of space.
