Usquebae
The word ‘whiskey’ is the shortened form of ‘whiskeybae’, which comes from the Old English word ‘usquebae’, derived from two Gaelic words ‘uisce’ (water) and ‘bethu’ (life). Thus, whiskey literally means “water of life”. According to insights from the latest SAWIS report, whisky is the most consumed spirit in SA with 4.1 million South Africans currently drinking it.
