Vaccine Monopoly
According to Oxfam, the Covid-19 vaccine could be five times cheaper if the pharmaceutical market was not monopolistic. The study claims that Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna are charging governments an estimated R595bn above the estimated cost of production. The Pfizer vaccine was funded at a cost of R120bn, which suggests that vaccines could be made for as little as R16.80 a dose. Despite this, COVAX has been charged nearly five times more.
