War in Europe, Starvation in Africa
In 2019 wheat imports into Africa were 47m tonnes per annum, increasing by 68% from 2007. The restricted access to, and rising prices of, wheat and sunflowers as a result of the Russia-Ukraine War is likely to impact food security in Africa. A lasting conflict could push an additional 30m people into acute food insecurity, bringing the total number of people to 174m.
