In his 2023 SONA, President Ramaphosa stated that “there are now more than 100 projects, which are expected to provide over 9,000 MW of new capacity over time”. As part of achieving this, the Renewable Independent Power Producer Programme has allocated over 6 000 MW of generation capacity to independent producers – primarily based in wind and solar power.
