James Edwin Webb (October 7, 1906 – March 27, 1992) was the administrator of NASA during the 1960s. Webb is best known for leading Apollo, a series of lunar exploration programs that landed the first humans on the Moon. He laid the foundations at NASA for one of the most successful periods of astronomical discovery and thus it’s a fitting honorary name for the next generation space telescope.
