The world’s first democratically elected female president was Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. She served as president of Iceland from 1980 to 1996. As of January 2019, 11 women are serving as Head of State and 10 are serving as Head of Government across the world. Sahle-Work Zewde is currently the only sitting female Head of State in Africa.
