South Africa ranks as the world's third most biologically diverse country, behind only Indonesia and Brazil. It's home to roughly 6% of the planet's plant species, 7% of its reptiles, birds and mammals, and 15% of its known coastal marine species. The country is made up of nine biomes, each a distinct vegetation landscape, and three have been recognised as global biodiversity hotspots.
