In 1982 a breeding pair of African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) were relocated from Dyer Island, near Gansbaai, to Boulders Beach in Simon's Town in effort to save the endangered species. The global population is declining by around 8% annually and is expected to be functionally extinct by 2035.
