Wildfires can be nearly impossible to escape, spreading at speeds of up to 50 km/h with wind assistance—faster than Usain Bolt's top speed of 44 km/h. To combat this threat, the City of Cape Town and SANParks spend ~R2m annually to maintain 10m-wide firebreaks along the Cape Peninsula.
