Today, Komodo dragons, the world's largest living lizards, survive only on a small cluster of islands in eastern Indonesia, including Flores, Komodo, and Rinca. Fossil evidence suggests they actually originated in Australia around 3 million years ago and spread westward, reaching Flores about 1 million years ago. As populations elsewhere died out and rising seas isolated these islands, this corner of Indonesia became the species' last remaining wild refuge.
