In September 2023, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) announced that they were awarded more than R867m to implement their "HIV Vaccine Innovation, Science, and Technology Acceleration in Africa (HIV-VISTA)" programme, courtesy of USAID. This grant was awarded to SAMRC through a competitive process to develop and test novel HIV vaccines in Africa.
