In 1992, Juan Carlos Galbis and his team cooked the world’s largest paella in Valencia, Spain. Weighing 27,215.15 kg (about 27 tonnes), the giant paella was made with 5,000 kg of rice, 6,200 kg of chicken, 2,600 kg of rabbit and 1,000 litres of olive oil and was eaten by more than 100,000 people. South Africa wastes around 10 million tonnes of food every year, equivalent to roughly 1,000 of these record-breaking paellas every single day.
