Merck has developed an antiviral pill called Molnupiravir that has the potential to halve the chances of hospitalizations and death for those most at risk of contracting severe COVID-19. It works by introducing multiple mutations into the genetic code of the COVID-19 virus, which in turn prevents it from replicating. While clinical trials are ongoing, data suggests that it is most effective when given in the early stages of infection.
