On average a Tour de France athlete has a VO2(max) of 75, more than double the average person (~35), with top riders reportedly having a VO2(max) of 92. VO2 (max) is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen a person's body can utilise during exercise as millilitres of oxygen consumed in one minute, per kilogram of body weight (mL/kg/min). Although there are several variables which contribute to overall fitness/performance, VO2(max) is an internationally recognised indicator.
