In the Middle Ages, across Western Europe, murder rates were as high as 20 to 100 people per 100,000. By the beginning of the 20th century, that number had dropped to 1 person per 100,000 in most western countries. In South Africa, the murder rate in 2016 was 34 per 100,000 people.
