Despite "0" being widely used in India since the 7th Century, Western Europe only learned about zero, (and the ‘Indo-Arabic’ number system we use today) with the knowledge transfer that accompanied the Crusades in the 11th century. However they continued to use Roman Numerals, which have no way of representing 'nothing', until the Renaissance.
