Bianca Buitendag became the second SA woman in history to win an Olympic medal outside athletics and swimming when she won silver in the inaugural surfing event with a score of 8.46 against the gold medalist (USA) Carissa Moore's score of 14.93. Amazingly if it were not for a number of SA national sporting federations forcing SASCOC to change the their selection policy in 2019, Bianca would not have been chosen to represent the country in Tokyo.
