The Lives Behind the Headlines
Statelessness is often catalysed by civil strife and persecution within asylum seekers’ home countries. Some of the most recent crises of statelessness, and numbers of displaced persons, include the Rohingya Persecution in Myanmar (est. 1.3m), the South Sudanese Civil War (est. 1.5m), the Syrian Civil War (est. 5.6m) and the Venezuelan Refugee Crisis (est. 5.4m). (Figures are typically estimations as the consequences of conflict within these regions are ongoing.)
