Wits researchers highlighted that at any given period there are up to 4 300 people waiting for organ donations in South Africa. Since the start of the pandemic, dwindling donor enrollment has increased the wait time for vital organs. Given the complications and lack of donor availability the average wait time for a kidney transplant is now 12-15 years, up from 8-10 years.
